What is Chemical Conversion Coating? Benefits, Applications & Comparison

For CNC machined aluminum components, selecting the right surface finish directly impacts corrosion resistance, bonding performance, dimensional tolerance and functionality. Many engineers and product buyers struggle to decide between chemical conversion coating, anodizing, micro arc oxidation and ceramic coating.

Chemical conversion coating, also widely called chromate conversion coating or Alodine, is a popular inorganic surface treatment for aluminum. Unlike painting or plating that deposits a new material onto the substrate, this finish forms a protective thin film through chemical reaction with the aluminum base material. The coating is only a few microns thick, so it barely changes the part dimension, which makes it ideal for precision CNC machined parts.

There are two main categories: traditional chromate conversion coating and eco-friendly chrome-free conversion coating that meets RoHS compliance requirements. Common colors include clear and golden iridescent finishes.

Key Benefits of Chemical Conversion Coating

  1. Reliable corrosion protection The conversion film offers good anti-corrosion performance for aluminum parts, preventing oxidation and rust during storage and transportation.

  2. Excellent adhesion base for glue or paint This is one of its biggest advantages. The surface creates a perfect bonding substrate. If you need to attach neoprene rubber or apply paint on aluminum parts later, chemical conversion coating significantly improves bonding strength.

  3. Negligible dimensional change The ultra-thin film will not disrupt tight tolerances on precision CNC components.

  4. Retains electrical conductivity Unlike anodizing which creates an insulating layer, conversion coating keeps the surface conductive. It is a great option for parts that require electrical contact while needing rust protection.

  5. Fast lead time and cost efficiency The treatment process is quick and affordable compared with micro arc oxidation or hard anodizing, suitable for prototype samples and mass production.

Typical Applications

Chemical conversion coating is widely adopted across industries for CNC aluminum parts:

  • Communication housings and heat sinks

  • Instrument and testing equipment structural components

  • Parts requiring adhesive assembly or subsequent painting

  • Semiconductor and aerospace prototype components

  • Precision fixtures and custom mechanical parts

Limitations of Chemical Conversion Coating

To help you make the best decision, it is important to understand its limitations. The wear resistance of conversion coating is lower than anodizing or micro arc oxidation. It is not recommended for parts that will face continuous friction or harsh long-term outdoor exposure. For those demanding working conditions, we suggest hard anodizing, ceramic coating or MAO treatment.

FAQ

Does chemical conversion coating add thickness to aluminum parts?

Only a tiny fraction of a micron. It will not affect tight tolerances for precision machined components.

Is chemical conversion coating conductive?

Yes. This is a major difference from standard anodizing.

Can I bond neoprene rubber on parts with chemical conversion coating?

Yes. It works very well as a base layer for adhesive bonding.

Is chrome-free conversion coating RoHS compliant?

Yes, our chrome-free option meets RoHS requirements.
